From childhood, boys are taught that their torsos are open for public display, whether at the swimming-pool, beach or on a sunny day. And boys and men alike are expected to stand in line at a urinal with their penises out, beside family, friends, work-colleagues and strangers. From school onwards, males are expected to undress together in the locker-room and expose their bodies in the communal showers. In fact, hesitancy to do so can lead to a guy being labelled unmanly or “queer”. Within all this public display, the only truly secret part left of a man’s body is his anus.
