As a gay man, I love the look and feel of penises, scrotums, buttocks and anuses. Yet these exquisite parts of a man’s anatomy are used as derogatory terms or insults in everyday language. Similarly, the pleasurable acts of masturbation and sodomy are given negative connotations and hurled in abuse. A generally stupid or contemptible person might be referred to as a “dick”, “bellend”, “prick” or “scrote”. Or the same man might be labelled a “wanker”, “tosser” or “arse”. Giving inaccurate information might illicit a response of “bollocks”. If a driver makes a dangerous manoeuvre, he is most likely an “arsehole” or a “knob”. If something goes wrong, a person might exclaim “balls”, “bugger”, “fuck it” or even “fuck me”. Rather than being insulted, I accept most of these terms as an unintended compliment. Just think about the beauty of a hard dick with its engorged bellend and a scrote with low-hanging bollocks, or a man’s hairy arse and enticing arsehole waiting to be pleasured. While what man does not enjoy being a wanker and tossing off? And as for that invitation to “fuck me”, the thrill from being a bugger immediately comes to mind! – Hugh Braceland
