Derived from Old English, “arse” is such a great sounding word. I love the resonance of rolling the “ar” before resolving onto the “se”. The word has an appropriately coarse and evocative sound, and “arsehole” is such a descriptive term too. In fact, “arse” is the source of many expressive terms, from “smart arse” to “short arse”, “half arsed” to “couldn’t give a rat’s arse”, and “get your arse into gear” to “working your arse off”. With no disrespect to our North American cousins, neither “ass” nor “butt” come anywhere close to matching the vibrancy of “arse”. So I’ll happily keep on enjoying my own “arse” and other men’s “arses” too. – HugH
