Mark Beard’s 9 Artists

Mark Beard is an American artist renowned for creating a vibrant ensemble of nine fictional artists, each with a distinct style and detailed backstory. This imaginative framework allows Beard to explore a variety of art movements and techniques while maintaining a playful critique of art history and identity. Among his alter egos, Bruce Sargeant (1898–1938) stands out as a “great gay English uncle” whose work celebrates the male form in homoerotic and classical compositions, often seen in murals like those at Abercrombie & Fitch’s flagship store. Hippolyte-Alexandre Michallon is another persona, a 19th-century French artist known for his exotic animal paintings and as a mentor to Bruce Sargeant. Edith Thayer Cromwell represents the avant-garde of 20th-century American art, blending Fauvism and Impressionism. Austrian artist Brechtholdt Streeruwitz brings a mix of Expressionism and Pop Art, while Peter Coulter, a contemporary figure, incorporates themes of social and political history in his work.
