Sigmund Freud, was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, who created an entirely new approach to the understanding of the human personality. He is regarded as one of the most influential – and controversial – minds of the 20th century. At a time when homosexuality was seen as an illness, this is what Freud had to say to a a desperate mother seeking the cure for her son’s homosexuality in 1935. In his correspondence with Wilhelm Fliess, a physician and colleague, Freud discussed his sexual desires and fantasies, including those involving men, suggesting that he had homosexual desires and experiences.
