Should all men take viagra?

Men taking Viagra are less likely to suffer a heart attack, new research claims. Men taking the impotence drug were found to have a lower risk of having a heart attack or dying from heart failure than those, not on the medication. The findings mean Viagra could soon be used to treat hundreds of thousands of heart failure patients and even prevent fatal heart attacks, scientists say. Experts from the University of Manchester studied 6,000 diabetic patients who had been given Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction. The drug relaxes muscle cells in the blood vessels supplying the penis, allowing more blood to flow there. This increased blood flow increases the likelihood of getting an erection. Despite diabetics being prone to heart problems, the study participants did not suffer as many incidents as similar patients, not on the drug. Professor Andrew Trafford and his team, funded by the British Heart Foundation, are hoping to show the medication can also help prevent arrhythmias – abnormal heart rhythms.

He told the Daily Express the findings, to be published in the journal BMJ Heart – are ‘incredibly exciting. Heart failure is a devastating condition which means your heart is not pumping blood around your body as well as it used to.’It can really impact a person’s quality of life and currently the outlook for patients with heart failure is grim – worse than that of some cancers. The team is now assessing whether the same drug can also prevent abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) which are responsible for killing up to half of heart failure patients. The drug relaxes muscle cells in the blood vessels supplying the penis, allowing more blood to flow there. ‘Our studies have shown that drugs normally used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, such as Viagra, actually have a very pronounced effect in slowing the progression of heart failure as well as reducing the likelihood of fatal arrhythmias. We have recently established that patients who receive Viagra or similar drugs for erectile dysfunction are also far less likely to then go on and die from a heart attack.’

  1. It was actually intended to prevent ischemic events originally. People forget that drugs often have multiple uses simply because they act the same way throughout the body. Viagra increases blood flow to the heart and brain (the original purpose) but also to the penis (what it’s mostly used for now) and to the eye (and those capillaries can burst, leading to blindness, really bad side effect).
